Looking for a safe, non-toxic way to promote whiter, healthier teeth without the use of harsh chemicals? With just a few ingredients, you can bid farewell to drugstore brands of toothpaste which often contain harmful fluoride, synthetic foaming agents, and antibacterial chemicals like triclosan.
It’s simple to make your own toothpaste at home using natural substances like food-grade diatomaceous earth (a type of magnetic clay), bentonite clay, and/or activated charcoal along with a healthy fat like coconut oil. Add one or more essential oils for the finishing touch.
Store your toothpaste in a sealed container. A small glass mason jar works well. To use, scoop a small amount out of the jar using a clean spoon or popsicle stick, spread on wet toothbrush bristles, and brush teeth as usual.
Here’s an easy DIY toothpaste recipe for you to try. Feel free to experiment with different essential oils to come up with a signature toothpaste “taste” that you love.

I have made the recipe but my whole family finds that our gums get very sore and sometimes bleed. This does not seem healthy. What are we doing wrong?
Julie says
Two things cause gum bleeding for me:
Sudden drops in vitamin C intake, which can make mucous membranes bleed more easily
And nutritional deficiencies, like CoQ10
(It is also possible to have gum inflammation from nit getting regular dental cleanings and the beginnings of gingivitis and periodontal disease)

Might be the baking soda

do mall toothpaste make your gums bleed
Gail says
Your capillaries are weak. You are not eating enough greens. You need more Bioflavanoids and Rutins. Also, Buckwheat is great for strengthening the walls of the capillaries ( and therefore helping to prevent strokes).
Paula says
too much peppermint and clove oil Those are very potent. Just use one or two drops. That could very well be why the gums are bleeding.
Lynn says
I used calcium carbonate powder and it worked great! This is actually a supplement, but works great in the toothpaste. I don't use clove EO, so not sure if that creates an issue.
F.M. says
I use basically the same recipe but without the bentonite which I am not able to purchase. I also use much less clove as I do peppermint because it is very hot and the inside of my mouth becomes uncomfortable. I do bleed occasionally and that is only when I am not diligent in my daily routine. You might want to try a softer bristle brush and see if that helps.
mae says
Will try sameno bc, with lesser drops.

Where do we find betonite?
Diane says
In any good health food store.
B says
If I understand the article, you may use diatomaceous earth in place of betonite clay?
t says
Diatomaceous earth is 8 on the hardness scale, diamonds are 10. Ive read it should not be used daily, just once in a while for stains.
Jolee says
I was told by my hygienist not to use baking soda very often as well. I use coconut oil, ground turmeric, and peppermint oil. It's great!
Carla says
Doesn't the Turmeric turn your mouth orange?
Pamela Burr says
As a retired dental hygienist, I urge you to find a (credentialed) dental professional to instruct your family on proper toothbrushing. If you're sawing back and forth, you could be injuring your gums and causing the bleeding. Congratulations and best wishes for being a family wanting improved oral health!
